Program summary

This is a developmental position re-engineered at less than the full performance level for training purposes. Duties are modeled after the target grade. The incumbent performs entry-level assignments designed to provide the competencies, skills, and experience required for power plant operations at a hydropower facility, responsible for operating generators, turbines, governors, and circuit breakers to ensure reliable power generation and proper voltage regulation.

Roles & job description

Position Details: Power Plant Operator • Core Role in Operations: Operates generators, turbines, governors, and circuit breakers, ensuring proper power generation and voltage regulation. • Water Control: Regulates water flow through turbines and spillways according to authorized reservoir specifications. • Monitoring & Control: Uses control boards to monitor and distribute electrical output; checks for abnormalities using meters and gauges. • Maintenance & Safety: Performs routine maintenance and minor repairs. Prepares equipment for maintenance using lockout/tag out procedures. • Inspections: Conducts regular, thorough inspections of the power plant, dam, and switchyard, often while walking, climbing, and crawling, often in loud/vibrating environments. • Emergency Action: Diagnoses problems and acts independently to manage or stop equipment during malfunctions. • Integration: Operate the powerplant, generate power, navigation and support the overall command mission. • Powerplant Oversight: Occupies a key staff position to operate the plant under a watch schedule. As a major regional hub known for its cherry production and 300+ days of sun, it offers a mix of outdoor recreation (hiking, boating), high-desert scenery, and rich Native American and Oregon Trail history.
