MOVE Boots to Biotech / Automation Technician / Host Company: Novo Nordisk / O*NET 17.3023.01 - Internship
The MOVE Boots to Biotech SkillBridge Program, administered by the North Carolina Biotechnology Center, partners with Novo Nordisk to provide a 12-week (480-hour) Automation Technician internship for transitioning Service Members. Novo Nordisk serves as the host employer, providing hands-on training within its pharmaceutical manufacturing operations in Clayton or Durham, North Carolina.Participants will gain practical experience in pharmaceutical automation systems, process control, PLCs, HMIs, process control systems (PCS/DCS), preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, equipment reliability, technical documentation, and cGMP compliance. The program is designed to translate military technical experience into the skills required for careers in pharmaceutical automation and advanced manufacturing.
Automation Technicians support the reliability and performance of automated systems used in pharmaceutical manufacturing. SkillBridge participants will train alongside experienced Novo Nordisk professionals to maintain, troubleshoot, and support automated manufacturing equipment and process control systems.Training may include PLC and HMI systems, process control systems, sensors and control devices, preventive maintenance, equipment troubleshooting, system monitoring and data collection, cGMP documentation, equipment reliability, and continuous improvement. Participants will progressively apply these skills through supervised on-the-job training and practical assignments designed to prepare them for entry-level Automation Technician employment.
This opportunity is particularly well suited for Service Members with experience in electronics, electrical systems, avionics, instrumentation, controls, industrial maintenance, communications systems, power generation, or automated equipment, including: Army: 12P, 15 Series, 25 Series, 91 Series, 94 Series Marine Corps: 1100, 2800, 5900, 6300/6400 Series Navy: ET, EM, IC, AT, AE, FC, GSE Air Force: 2A, 2P, 2M, 3E0X1, 3E0X2 and related technical maintenance specialties Coast Guard/Space Force: Equivalent electronics, electrical, controls, communications, engineering, or technical maintenance specialties Equivalent MOCs and applicants with demonstrated transferable technical experience are encouraged to apply.
Applicants must meet DoW SkillBridge eligibility requirements and obtain command approval prior to participation. Competitive candidates should demonstrate strong mechanical or electrical aptitude, technical troubleshooting ability, attention to detail, commitment to safety and quality, and the ability to learn complex automated systems.Prior pharmaceutical experience is not required. Experience with electronics, PLCs, instrumentation, industrial controls, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, electrical systems, or automated equipment is highly transferable.Participants must also be able to meet applicable Novo Nordisk site access, safety, physical, scheduling, and other host-employer requirements.
This opportunity is provided through MOVE Boots to Biotech as the third-party SkillBridge provider, with Novo Nordisk serving as the host employer for the on-the-job training experience. Participants remain active-duty Service Members and continue receiving military pay and benefits during their approved SkillBridge participation.Applicants will undergo an individualized Skills Gap Assessment to evaluate the transferability of their military experience and identify any additional training needs. Participants who would benefit from additional foundational preparation may be considered for the BioWork Certificate Program through a North Carolina Community College. BioWork provides foundational instruction in biopharmaceutical manufacturing, cGMP, quality systems, safety, cleanroom operations, and industry practices. Scholarship support may be available through the MOVE Boots to Biotech employer network when applicable.Successful completion of SkillBridge does not guarantee employment. However, participants who successfully complete the program will be prepared to compete for Automation Technician opportunities with Novo Nordisk and related technical positions across North Carolina's biopharmaceutical manufacturing industry.
