The Commercial Pilot to Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) SkillBridge Program is an 18-week, competency-based professional development program designed to prepare transitioning service members for immediate employment as FAA Certified Flight Instructors within a Part 141 flight training environment.Participants progress through structured training that develops the technical proficiency, instructional ability, leadership skills, and professional judgment required of an entry-level flight instructor. The program begins by refining advanced commercial pilot skills, including cross-country operations, aircraft performance, commercial maneuvers, complex and technically advanced aircraft operations, and multi-engine flight. These skills establish the operational foundation necessary for professional instruction.Building upon this foundation, trainees transition into instructor development where they learn to effectively teach aeronautical knowledge, conduct ground instruction, demonstrate and explain flight maneuvers, evaluate student performance, identify and correct errors, manage operational risk, and apply the FAA Fundamentals of Instructing. Throughout the program, participants gain experience delivering structured lessons, conducting scenario-based training, maintaining training records, communicating professionally with students, and operating within an FAA-approved Part 141 curriculum.The program concludes with comprehensive preparation for the FAA Certified Flight Instructor practical examination while simultaneously evaluating each participant for employment as a flight instructor. Successful participants earn the FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate, Multi-Engine Rating, and Certified Flight Instructor Certificate (as applicable), providing the qualifications necessary to begin a civilian aviation career immediately upon completion of military service.

A Certified Flight Instructor provides professional flight and ground instruction to pilots pursuing FAA certificates and ratings under Part 61 and Part 141 training programs. Instructors are responsible for delivering structured lessons that develop technical flying skills, aeronautical knowledge, sound decision-making, and risk management while maintaining the highest standards of safety and regulatory compliance.Primary responsibilities include conducting classroom and flight instruction, demonstrating and evaluating flight maneuvers, providing constructive performance feedback, maintaining accurate training records, preparing students for FAA knowledge and practical examinations, and ensuring compliance with FAA regulations and approved training syllabi. Flight instructors also mentor students throughout their training, promote a strong safety culture, and adapt instructional techniques to meet individual learning needs.Additional responsibilities include preflight and postflight briefings, lesson planning, aircraft and weather risk assessment, coordination with dispatch and maintenance personnel, professional communication with students and staff, and participation in instructor standardization and continuing education.Successful Certified Flight Instructors demonstrate excellent communication and leadership skills, strong aeronautical decision-making, professionalism, instructional effectiveness, and the ability to safely manage flight training operations in a dynamic aviation environment. This position serves as a foundational professional role within the aviation industry and prepares instructors for advancement into corporate, airline, charter, military, or aviation management careers.
