VHA Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System Pharmacy Technician - Job Training Program
Pharmacy Service at the RJH VAMC has experienced a staffing shortage with a service line rate of 20% over the last three years. Ralph H Johnson is surrounded by 8 hospitals within 20 square miles including 2 Magnet designated hospitals which makes the recruitment and retention for a highly qualified applicant challenging. While Charleston is a desirable location, the high cost of living and potential long distance commute makes recruitment efforts difficult.
Pharmacy technicians in this assignment specialize in areas such as sterile compounding, oncology, controlled substances, medication history review, clinical specialist (anticoagulation, pain, infectious diseases), clinical informatics, automation, immunizations and any other specialized area in the advancement of the profession. The technician will be performing assignments such as compounding sterile products, filling controlled substance prescriptions while maintaining compliance with Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) regulations, taking medication histories and counseling patients, managing automation, managing workflow and training and orienting staff in the specialized area.
