Program summary

This is a developmental position re-engineered at less than the full performance level for recruitment and training purposes. The duties of the position are like those of the full-time position target grade WG-5729-05. Performs entry level work with assignments designed to provide the competencies, skills, and experience required to perform the more complex work at the full performance grade level. The work increases in difficulty, complexity, and responsibility as the incumbent gains experience and demonstrates a full comprehension of assigned work.

Roles & job description

DRILL RIG OPERATOR HELPER - Assists in completing drilling projects to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the full duties of a drill rig operator at the journeyman level. As a drill rig operator helper assists drill rig operator in transporting, set up, alignment and operation of drill rigs and equipment by assembly/disassembly of drilling tools (drill rods, steel casing, augers, core barrels, drill bits), ensuring proper hook up and dispensing of drilling mud and water, and ensuring safe operation of drill rig and equipment by fastening supports and anchors. Checks project specific drilling requirements and gathers and loads/unloads equipment supplies for projects. Moves or assists in moving of drill rigs and equipment over difficult or hazardous terrain. Assists with performance of routine maintenance, greasing, and lubrication of drill rigs and equipment. Assists in troubleshooting and making repairs to drill rigs and equipment. Responsible for maintaining small tools and equipment such as wrenches, screw drivers, saws, axes, picks, shovels, chain tongs, mattocks, etc. Assists during drilling operations by obtaining tools for drill rig operator and returning tools to storage kit at completion of operation; cleaning casings, drill rods, augers, and split spoon samplers; placing split spoon samplers in readiness for use; and guiding casing and rods in and out of bore holes while drilling is in progress. Responsible for removing soil samples and rock core from sampling devices as directed by drill rig operator. Assists field geologist in preservation of soil and rock samples. At the direction of drill rig operator, sets water pumps in location and connects water lines from pump to drill rig. Assists the field team in keeping work areas clear and performs site restoration after drilling completion. Under the direct supervision of the drill rig operator, operates drill rig at intermittent intervals as part of on-the-job training to becoming drill rig operator.
