Medical Lab Technologist

The Medical Laboratory Technician SkillBridge Training Program is a 12-week structured training experience designed to prepare transitioning service members for civilian laboratory careers. The program begins with general orientation, mandatory education, job shadowing, and administrative preparation. Participants then complete supervised new-hire style OJT, a midpoint check-in with career assistance, and advanced OJT with increasing independence. The final week includes a readiness assessment, application support, interview preparation, and transition planning.Participants gain exposure to laboratory safety, specimen workflow, quality control, documentation, communication, prioritization, and professional expectations in a healthcare laboratory setting. Training is conducted under appropriate supervision and in accordance with employer policy, SkillBridge requirements, laboratory safety standards, and applicable certification or licensure rules.Participants who successfully complete the program may be considered for open positions based on business needs, qualifications, licensure/certification status, and performance during the program.

The Medical Lab Technician performs clinical laboratory testing under the supervision of a Medical Lab Scientist to support accurate diagnosis, informed treatment decisions, and ongoing patient care. This role assists across multiple laboratory disciplines—including chemistry, hematology, microbiology, blood banking, and urinalysis—by preparing specimens, performing testing procedures, and supporting established quality and safety practices. The Medical Lab Technician helps maintain efficient laboratory operations by following standardized protocols, monitoring instrumentation, and contributing to reliable, timely test results. When assigned, the position may also support phlebotomy activities to facilitate prompt specimen collection within a collaborative laboratory environment.

Licenses and Certifications Required:• Possess or is eligible to receive laboratory certification by American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).• If certification is not held upon hire, it must be completed within 12 months of employment.• Evidence of ND State license or ND Provisional Permit.• Individuals hired with a Provisional Permit must obtain the full ND State License within 12 months of employment.Educational Requirements:• Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, or clinical laboratory technology.• Official diploma or transcript from the school/university from where Degree was received.Experience Requirements:• Clinical Internship required.• Previous experience working in a clinical laboratory setting is preferred.Special Skills or Training Requirements:• None other than those required in Clinical Internship.

Must have licensure before the start of clinical. If licensure is not obtained, job shadowing will continue until licensure is acquired.
