Understanding a Commissioning LeadA Commissioning Lead is a senior technical role within a project’s commissioning team, responsible for overseeing and coordinating the final stages of bringing a facility, plant, or system into operational use. This role ensures that all installed systems meet design specifications, safety standards, and contractual requirements before handover to the client or operations team.Core ResponsibilitiesA Commissioning Lead typically:Reviews and approves commissioning plans for a specific discipline (e.g., mechanical, electrical, automation) or the entire project, ensuring they align with the project schedule and guidelines Commissioning and Startup.Manages pre-commissioning and commissioning activities on-site, including mobilizing personnel and equipment, preparing execution plans, and supervising procedures Together Abroad.Oversees functional testing of systems such as HVAC, pumps, chillers, boilers, generators, compressors, fire protection, and process systems Together Abroad+1.Coordinates with vendors, subcontractors, and the project team to ensure timely delivery of resources and support Together Abroad.Prepares and maintains commissioning records, test reports, and operating manuals for handover Commissioning and Startup.Ensures compliance with safety, health, and environmental (HSSE/HSE) standards throughout the process Together Abroad.Prepares progress reports to project management and commissioning departments Together Abroad.Skills and ExperienceTypical qualifications include:10+ years’ experience in mechanical, rotating, or related engineering disciplines, often in oil & gas, power plants, or industrial facilities Together Abroad.Strong technical knowledge of commissioning procedures, test scripts, and equipment performance.Excellent written and verbal communication skills for interfacing with clients, contractors, and internal teams.Ability to lead and motivate a commissioning team, create an empowering work culture, and manage multiple tasks under deadlines Commissioning and Startup.

The Commissioning Technical Lead II ensures all systems, equipment, rooms, components, and structures are installed, tested, and operate according to project specifications, industry standards, and best practices. This role mentors and trains new staff and technicians assigned to the project while maintaining high emphasis on maintaining customer satisfaction. Your responsibilities will include:Owns reviewing drawings, specifications, Sequence of Operations, and design specifications to create testing documents for commissioning testing requirements. Owns the development of System Start Up Matrices to assist with schedule development with the Project Managers for their specified disciplines. Owns building out the commissioning software with the correct dependencies for proper tracking and equipment/system turn over. Owns schedule integration into the commissioning software to assist with Key Project Indicators. Runs commissioning meetings with subcontractors to ensure proper project turnover. Tracks commissioning issues for quick and efficient closure. Mentoring and leading junior engineers. Key contact for field coordination and client needs. Responsible for verification in the field and commissioning software that all deliverables are uploaded, filled out accurately, and field installations meet the design requirements. Key communication point for needed project deliverables. Travel up to 85% annually. Other duties which may be assigned as needed. May supervise others. Education/Experience:Bachelor’s degree in any engineering field and 4 years of experience in commissioning preferred, or a combination of education and experience.
