Adult Corrections Officer, State of Hawaii, Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation - Internship Program
Initially receives training and orientation in basic security and custodial duties; performs security and custodial duties at a variety of posts as assigned; and performs other related duties as assigned.
Assists and / or supervises the oversight of residents in housing units, during meals and bathing, at recreation, in various testing procedures and on work assignments; escorts residents to and from activities and on trips outside the facility; stands armed watch on post or patrols grounds, security walls and fences; takes periodic counts of inmates; participates and assists in searches of residents and inspection of quarters for contraband; guards entrance ways and searches vehicles; informs visitors of rules and assists and / or performs the search of their person; reports infractions of rules or suspicious occurrences to a higher level officer and / or takes other required action; prevents escapes and / or injury by residents to themselves, employees and to property; participates in searches for escapees; receives and checks firearms, ammunition and other supplies and equipment; assists in advising new residents on rules, procedures, schedules, etc.; may provide information to individual residents on community resources and makes referrals to the professional staff; observes and reports on conditions affecting the wellbeing and behavior of residents, and other information which may be helpful in the correctional process; assists in maintaining and encouraging communication and relations with inmates including group discussion sessions with inmates; makes entries in a log and prepares reports as necessary.

All applicants must meet all federal and State regulations applicable to the carrying, use and possession of firearms and ammunition at the time of appointment; must be qualified for use of, access to firearms at all times through the department's Training and Staff Development Office, which includes being drug free; subject to drug screening and subject to intensive background check; must be able to perform the essential functions of the position effectively and safely, with or without reasonable accommodation; knowledge of basic English; basic purposes of a prison; learn and apply basic security and custodial procedures and techniques; learn about basic human development and the use and care of firearms and apply such knowledge; learn to observe the habits and understand the attitudes and behavior of adult felons in confinement; work cooperatively and effectively with others; develop the ability to supervise adult residents individually and in groups; maintain personal integrity in dealing with adult criminals; discuss the behavior and attitudes of adult residents as well as to understand and explain institutional rules, regulations and SOPs; learn correctional concepts and techniques including group discussion techniques and assist in maintaining relations and effective communication with residents; defend oneself and prevent escapes; think and act quickly in emergencies; complete reports.
