CODE 300N NUCLEAR ZONE MANAGER

This training plan for servicemembers with strong nuclear project management backgrounds to participate in the SkillBridge program at Nuclear Regional Maintenance Department (NRMD) Kings Bay, Ga., a detachment of Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY). The program's objective is to equip participants with the necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) to efficiently and effectively perform the duties of a GS-12 Zone Manager at NRMD. This comprehensive training program utilizes a blended learning approach incorporating classroom instruction, hands-on exercises, and on-the-job training (OJT). Each training period will conclude with an assessment of the intern's KSA, ensuring mastery of the curriculum. The tailored training plan outlined below describes a 13-week training plan designed to leverage their existing expertise and accelerate their development.

The Nuclear Zone Manager serves as a Project Management Specialist for Code 300N at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, stationed in Kings Bay, GA. The incumbent is directly responsible for the overall performance of an assigned work "Zone," ensuring that high-quality ship repair and overhaul tasks are accomplished in a timely and cost-effective manner. This role involves planning, directing, and providing comprehensive oversight for all trade, shop, and technical activities within the zone to meet production goals and Navy quality standards. By determining resource requirements and adjusting priorities to comply with changing milestones, the manager ensures the economical use of personnel and equipment to meet the Shipyard’s critical mission objectives and support Navy fleet readiness.Operational success requires the seamless integration of diverse workflows between inside shops, ship’s force, and engineering teams. The incumbent continuously monitors progress to achieve cost and schedule commitments, making critical decisions to resolve conflicts related to sequence, space, and material growth. This position provides project management oversight to Wage Grade personnel, working closely with trade supervisors to eliminate production bottlenecks and provide immediate resolution to operational problems. Because the work involves complex naval systems—including weapons and propulsion—the manager must exercise significant judgment in adapting guidelines and developing new practices to meet unique vessel requirements and shifting priorities.This is a physically demanding field role performed primarily shipboard or in dry-docks, requiring the ability to climb vertical ladders, crawl, and evaluate work in adverse weather and industrial conditions. Success depends on strong negotiation and persuasion skills to motivate personnel and coordinate with high-level shipyard and ship leadership. Candidates must be able to obtain a Secret security clearance, travel up to 10%, and demonstrate the flexibility to work all three shifts, including overtime, weekends, and holidays. Ultimately, the incumbent ensures that all work is authorized and safe, directly impacting the Shipyard’s mission and the combat readiness of the United States Navy.
