Timber Framer - Job Training Program

Timber Framers are a critical part of the organization that assist in the design, layout, joinery and raising of custom-built timber frame homes and structures. All framers work on site at the Lon Tyler Company workshop in Sweet Home, Oregon. The primary focus of timber framers within the Lon Tyler Company is to assist the team in the design, layout, fabrication of joinery and final raising of timber frame structures. All framers have a common metric focused on the quality of joinery and layout and the overall satisfaction of our customers in the construction of their timber frame home/structure.This is an entry level role that is crucial for the continued timely completion of contracts and jobs from customers of the Lon Tyler Company. Without skilled framers, throughput of refined timbers, frame layout, and fabrication of joinery would greatly decrease and result in less jobs completed annually.Due to the small size of Lon Tyler Company, timber framers are highly engaged in the entire process, from obtaining initial contracts, structural design, frame layout, fabrication of joinery, and frame raising. Under the guidance of framers with many years of craftsmanship experience, entry level timber framers will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to work independently to complete key steps in the framing process.Utilizing both traditional framing techniques that are hundreds of years old coupled with modern construction and design techniques, framers will assist the team in constructing timeless frames for homes and structures that inspire people for generations to come.

Timber Framers are the heart of Lon Tyler Company, which designs and builds custom timber frame homes and structures using both traditional and modern framing and joinery techniques.Entry level timber framers follow a three-year apprenticeship program through the Timber Framer’s Guild prior to becoming a journeyman timber framer. During these three years, candidates will learn the basics of carpentry, timber frame design, layout, joinery, and raising while working in a hands-on workshop environment. Under the guidance and mentorship of owner and senior timber framer Lon Tyler, candidates will learn the knowledge and skills necessary to complete a majority of the timber framing workflow independently, becoming an indispensable member of any timber framing crew.The Lon Tyler Company is looking for a passionate entry level timber framer who enjoys working with his/her hands, understands concepts quickly, and is willing to dive into the technical and artistic world of designing custom timber frame structures. As an entry level timber framer, the successful candidate would be responsible for interpreting technical design drawings, identifying the quantity/length/strength of timbers necessary to fill structural and design requirements, and apply carpentry skills to fabricate joinery in accordance with technical drawings. As candidates gain familiarity with the timber framing workflow, they will be able to increasingly contribute to business activities and correspondence with customers, suppliers, and engineers.The successful candidate will have completed a workforce development program like DoD SkillBridge, pre- apprenticeship program, prior experience in carpentry, construction, engineering, or other timber framing related courses such as the Heartwood School for timber framing.The successful candidate will need to possess the ability to work both independently and collaborate with others in a workshop environment. Clear communication and documentation on the status of various timbers and joints will be critical for seamless workflow as multiple framers collaborate on the same project. Successful candidates must also possess an action oriented, results focused mindset in order to ensure end results meet both engineering, employer, and customer expectations.

Open to all MOS / ratings / AFSCs.

Basic math and trigonometry skills required. Knowledge of basic workshop and power tools required. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a team required. Computer Aided Design (CAD) skills highly desirable. Ability to read technical engineering/design drawings preferred. Knowledge of various species of wood and their mechanical properties preferred. Passion and desire to work in a hands-on woodshop environment required.
