Koniag Lands

The Natural Resource Superintendent provides overall support to the Lands Department including interfacing with the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge/Alaska Department of Fish and Game, managing the Lands Permit Program, assisting with grant proposals, budget tracking and invoice management, supporting wildlife and fisheries projects, and aid in the formulation of a subsistence program.

Essential Functions include, but are not limited to: Supports the Lands Manager in administrative and project tasks. Assist in management and support of Lands projects. Assist in drafting and submission of grant proposals. Assist in wildlife research projects, including deer and bear population monitoring using camera traps and drones. Take lead in remote cabin preparation and maintenance responsibilities in coordination with the Kodiak Brown Bear Center. Administer Land Access Permit Program; ensure online access to permits, maintains log of all permits sold including online paper, and commercial permits. Develop and maintain a positive working relationships with lodges and commercial operations that utilize Koniag lands. Develop and maintain a positive working relationship with tribal entities adjacent to Koniag lands. Assist in development of a system for reporting and response of trespass activities on Koniag lands. Assist in development of a long-term land use compliance and enforcement plan for Koniag lands. Assist in the development and implementation of a culturally based subsistence program. Assist with Lands Department administrative and clerical tasks. Special projects as assigned. Other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills & Ability: Highly organized, self-starting individual capable of managing multiple priorities. Strong computer skills with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Familiar with using ArcMap GIS Excellent interpersonal skills; must be able to work independently and interact effectively with all levels of the organization. Excellent oral and written communications skills. Capable of working in remote locations. Regular travel to remote locations via float plane, helicopter, and boat. Draft and review reports on projects and programs. Must be willing to acquire a drone pilots license. Must be willing to acquire pesticide applicators credentials with the State of Alaska.

This position is located in Kodiak, AK. This position is seasonally outdoors, and includes extensive travel by floatplane, helicopter, and boat to remote locations. The incumbent is required to work in difficult weather conditions and walk long distances in remote settings. The incumbent must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 lbs. Remote housing situations include living in close quarters with other crew and colleagues working on similar projects. During non-field season periods, the incumbent will work primarily in Koniag’s Kodiak Office and participate in various lands related activities, including planning, budgeting, and collaboration with other departments.
