Roles & job description

James City County offers transitioning service members placement opportunities across multiple County departments — including Administration, Community Development, Financial & Management Services, General Services (e.g. Stormwater, Solid Waste, Capital Projects), Human Resources, Information Resources Management, Parks & Recreation, and Public Safety. Depending on your interests, skills, and experience, you’ll be placed in a department to support real-world projects such as project coordination, customer service, capital improvement assistance, regulatory compliance tracking, community outreach, or technical support. These flexible placements are structured to build professional experience within local government, highlight transferable skills, and help you identify long-term career paths in a mission-driven public sector environment.

Eligibility notes

Eligible participants must be active-duty service members who meet DoD SkillBridge criteria, including command approval and being within 180 days of separation. Final placement is contingent on successful completion of any department-specific onboarding requirements (e.g., background checks, certifications, or security clearances, as applicable). Candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in public service, be in good standing with their current command, and possess the flexibility to adapt to a civilian work environment.

Additional notes

Additional information about work location will vary depending on the department in which the SkillBridge internship is hosted. Placement may occur at satellite offices, operational facilities, or field-based sites across James City County. Specific details will be provided during the placement process based on departmental needs and intern interests.

Interview prep for this program
Ask them
  • ▸ "How many of your past SkillBridge interns received full-time offers?" — a serious program knows the number.
  • ▸ "Who will my day-to-day mentor be, and what does week one look like?"
  • ▸ "The listing says 31 - 60 days — can that flex to my approved window if my command shortens it?"
  • ▸ "Is relocation expected for a full-time offer, or can I convert where I am?"
  • ▸ Confirm the eligibility notes above — ask exactly what they need from you and when.
Bring to the conversation
  • ✓ Your projected start window and separation date (from your profile)
  • ✓ Your command's approval status — even "packet drafted" signals you're serious
  • ✓ Your civilian-translated resume bullets (generate them here)
  • ✓ A written training-plan ask — you'll need it for your packet anyway
