Bolton & Menk - Civil Engineering - Internship

The Bolton & Menk Civil Engineering SkillBridge Internship provides transitioning service members with hands‑on experience in entry‑level civil engineering tasks, including construction observation, survey measurement, CAD drafting, engineering documentation, and foundational design support. Over the course of this 12‑week, in‑person program, participants learn safety protocols, field operations, drafting techniques, and basic engineering computations while working directly with Professional Engineers, Engineers‑in‑Training, Engineering Technicians, and Project Managers.Through structured mentorship and real‑world project exposure, interns practice field data collection, materials testing, construction staking, preliminary reporting, and CAD modeling aligned with municipal infrastructure workflows. The program prepares service members for early‑career roles such as Civil Engineering Technician, Engineering Graduate, or Design Engineer (EIT) by building technical competency, professional communication skills, and an understanding of how engineering teams plan, design, and support community projects across Bolton & Menk’s service regions.

Civil Engineers at Bolton & Menk are responsible for supporting the planning, design, and execution of municipal infrastructure projects. They perform detailed engineering computations, develop preliminary and advanced designs, prepare reports and feasibility studies, create plans and specifications, conduct construction‑phase engineering services, and ensure quality standards across project deliverables. Civil Engineers may also assist with project management tasks, coordinate with regulatory agencies, guide design teams, and contribute to client communication. Depending on level, roles may include Engineering Graduates, Design Engineers (EIT), Project Engineers, and Engineering Project Managers, each advancing into increasing responsibility for design leadership, technical direction, and project oversight.Civil Engineering Technologists and Technicians support engineers through hands‑on field and drafting tasks essential to delivering accurate, compliant, and efficient project outcomes. They assist in producing engineering drawings, conduct basic engineering computations, use CAD software for layout and design, and perform manual drafting. In the field, they carry out surveying, construction staking, material testing, quantity tracking, progress recording, and construction observation. Technicians frequently serve as resident project representatives on routine projects and play a critical role in gathering accurate field data, documenting construction activities, and supporting both early‑stage design development and on‑site project execution.
