Program summary

This SkillBridge training program provides transitioning service members to a civilian career with practical exposure to the energy and engineering consulting industry while supporting the project management team. Participants will learn the fundamentals of energy and sustainability consulting, assist with project coordination, and develop professional communication skills.The program will translate military leadership, intelligence analysis, and operational coordination experience into private sector competencies including project planning, business analysis, stakeholder management, and operational improvement.The participant will work closely with a project manager and multidisciplinary engineering teams to observe and support real projects involving energy efficiency, sustainability, engineering consulting, and industrial operations. The program emphasizes translating military leadership into project management, professional communication, and analytical thinking to prepare the participant for a civilian career in project management and other leadership positions.

Roles & job description

Participants completing the program will be able to:1. Understand the fundamentals of the energy, engineering, and sustainability consulting industries.2. Apply core project management principles including planning, coordination, and tracking deliverables.3. Support project managers in organizing project documentation, timelines, and stakeholder communication.4. Develop professional presentation and public speaking skills.5. Gain experience working with multidisciplinary technical teams.6. Analyze energy and operational data to support project development.7. Develop strategic recommendations supported by data and analysis. 8. Prepare and present project summaries or technical findings to internal teams and executive leadership.Training Activities Participants may engage in the following activities:• Learning the basics of Microsoft Suites (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)• Professional development workshops and training • Job shadowing and mentorship• Participate in internal project meetings and client calls• Preparing meeting notes and summarizing action items• Assist in development of presentations and reports• Support preparation of proposals or project documentationSkills Development The program emphasizes development of the following skills:Project Management Skills• Project lifecycle understanding• Task tracking and coordination• Stakeholder communication• Documentation and reportingProfessional Communication Skills• Presentation development• Public speaking• Meeting facilitation• Technical writingIndustry Knowledge• Energy, wastewater and sustainability concepts• Funding programs through Utility Rebates/Incentives and Government Grants• Engineering consulting workflows• Industrial operations and systems• Project delivery in technical consulting environmentsAdditional Professional Skills• Strategic decision making• Critical thinking and problem solving• Teamwork Mentorship & SupervisionThe participant will report directly to a Project Manager who will provide guidance and oversight throughout the program. Mentorship includes:• Weekly check-ins to review progress and learning goals• Guidance on project management practices• Feedback on presentations and professional development• Exposure to different departments and technical teams• Support pursuing technical certifications (e.g. CAPM, PMP) • Career transition supportPerformance Evaluation Participant progress will be evaluated through:• Weekly check-ins & feedback• Participation in project support activities• Completion of assigned learning tasks and training courses • Demonstrated improvement in communication and project management knowledge • Final capstone project presentationExpected OutcomesBy the end of the program participants should:• Understand how engineering and energy consulting projects are developed and managed• Demonstrate improved communication and presentation skills• Understand basic project management tools and workflows• Gain confidence presenting ideas and technical concepts • Be prepared for roles in project coordination, project management, or consulting in the energy and engineering sectors

Cost and Expense ResponsibilitiesParticipation in this SkillBridge training program does not involve salary or wages from host organization. The participant remains on active duty and continues to receive pay and benefits from the U.S. Department of Defense during the duration of the program.Participant ExpensesUnless otherwise noted, the participant is responsible for personal expenses associated with participation in the program, which may include: • Transportation to and from the office or training location• Personal vehicle costs (fuel, parking, tolls)• Meals during the workday• Personal technology or equipment not provided by the host organizationHost Organization Supported ExpensesThe host organization may provided limited support to facilitate training participation, which could include: • Workspace and office access• Laptop• Access to necessary software and project management tools• Training materials and education resources• Participation in internal meetings, workshops, or professional development sessions• Occasional travel for project observation or professional events Any travel or reimbursable expense must be pre-approved by the program supervisor and will follow the organization’s standard travel and expense policies. No Cost to the GovernmentThis program is structured as a training opportunity and does not create additional cost obligations for the federal government beyond the participant’s standard military compensation and benefits.
