DODSKILLBRIDGE - Job Training Program

Week 1: Shop Safety, Practices & Procedures – This time will be to introduce trainees to basic trade nomenclature and common practices associated with day-to-day work. Topics will include shop flow, machine names and operation, use of hardware, shop tools and application and care. Shop Safety and operation will be covered and trained on. All the training provided will be hands-on and/or instructional and performed in the shop with direct supervision.Weeks 2-8: Metal Fabrication Basic – Training on the fundamentals of sheet metal shop operation. Shop safety and shop operation practices will be reviewed. Correct operation of sheet metal hand tools, rotary machines, power shear and roll forming machines are included in training work. Fundamentals of Sheet metal layout will be practiced and applied to fabrication scenarios. All the training provided will be hands-on and/or instructional and performed in the shop with direct supervision.Week 9: Blueprint Reading -This time will be This designed to educate students in the fundamentals of reading construction documents associated with the general construction industry. Topics include: Architectural Drawings, Mechanical Drawings, Foremen’s Drawings, Specifications, Submittals and other documents. All the training provided will be hands-on and/or instructional and performed in the shop with direct supervision.Weeks 10-12: Intermediate Metal Fabrication - More challenging methods of triangulation, radial line development and seaming will be covered. Trainees will further develop those basic skills learned in week 2,3, and 4 and apply them to more challenging projects. All the training provided will be hands-on and/or instructional and performed in the shop with direct supervision.Sheet Metal InstallationWeeks 13-16: Sheet Metal Installation – This time will be spent out in the field with the Trainer instructing the Trainee on the following activities:• Assembly and installation of commercial HVAC systems which include sheet metal ductwork, air handling units, or air terminal units per plans and best practices.• Setting rooftop and/or condensing units.• Introduction into successfully leading a project and small crew. • Safety procedures and company safety policies, including wearing appropriate construction attire and Personal Protective Equipment.• Operating company vehicles and equipment.• Climbing ladders, and scaffolding, and use man lifts and scissor lifts to perform work duties.All the training provided will be hands-on and/or instructional training with direct supervision and performed in the field at various jobsites.Training Program Competencies -Trainees, at the completion of the training program, should have a basic understanding and knowledge of how metal fabrication and installation is performed. They should be able to do basic fabricating, assembling, installing, and repairing of sheet metal parts, equipment, and products. Through the training program, they should know how to use hand and power tools, know basic layout techniques, and have a good introduction into metal characteristics. Trainees should be able to install duct work, sheet metal fittings, dampers, louvers, and air system components with some supervision.

Metal fabricators use machines and hand tools to follow patterns and blueprints to create structures from raw metal. They are skilled craftspeople who assemble structural metal products such as frameworks or ductwork form homes and buildings. When installing, they will perform cuts, bends, and shapes sheet metal to required dimensions. Measures, cuts, and welds pieces together according to specifications, blueprints, or directions. Connects pieces or secures seams by riveting, rolling, soldering, or using steel screws.
