Foundations of Geographic Information Systems
Students will explore core GIS concepts, data types (vector, raster, and tabular), and geospatial analysis techniques while gaining practical experience with ArcGIS tools. This course provides the foundational knowledge needed for entry-level GIS tasks, from creating and sharing maps to performing data visualization and spatial analysis.By the end of the program, students will be prepared to take the GIS Fundamentals Foundation 2024 Technical Certificate Exam and confidently apply GIS principles in various industries. Coursework will also culminate in a portfolio.
Gain hands-on experience performing GIS technician duties, including producing and interpreting maps using cartographic principles; collecting, managing, and organizing spatial data (tabular, vector, raster, 3D) while maintaining databases and applying coordinate systems; using GNSS for field data collection; conducting spatial queries, geoprocessing, and network analyses; digitizing and editing data with attention to topology and quality control; applying advanced vector/raster analysis and surface modeling techniques; designing and presenting clear, thematic maps; using ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and other GIS software for data management, analysis, automation, and web applications; planning and executing GIS projects while developing a professional portfolio.
