Program summary

This Critical Care Registered Nurse opportunity provides transitioning service members with hands-on experience delivering patient-centered care in a collaborative, high-reliability healthcare environment within the Charlotte area of Advocate Health. Based in a large academic, Level I trauma facility, participants strengthen clinical, leadership, communication, and teamwork skills while caring for diverse patient populations. The role aligns closely with military-developed competencies such as adaptability, accountability, team leadership, and mission-focused performance, supporting a successful transition to civilian healthcare practice. Nurses complete a structured onboarding process that includes a one-day, in-person facility orientation, required asynchronous learning (regulatory education and Epic training), and approximately 6–12 weeks of precepted clinical experience, with orientation length tailored to individual experience and the assigned unit.

Roles & job description

The Critical Care Registered Nurse provides high quality, patient centered care in a critical care unit in an acute care setting through the application of evidence-based nursing practice, clinical expertise, and compassionate care delivery. The RN assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates individualized care plans while collaborating with interdisciplinary team members to promote safe, effective outcomes across the continuum of care. Responsibilities include monitoring patient conditions, administering medications and treatments per clinical protocols, maintaining accurate electronic documentation, and delegating tasks appropriately to nursing team members. The RN actively participates in quality improvement initiatives, professional governance activities, and patient safety efforts, while demonstrating effective communication, conflict resolution, and ethical decision making aligned with the ANA Code of Ethics. Flexibility to support multiple units or departments may be required based on patient care needs.
