The Line Locator Technician (Grade I) is a field-based role responsible for detecting, marking, and documenting the location of underground utilities prior to excavation activities. Utility types include natural gas, electric, telecommunications, water, sewer, and fiber lines. This is a hands-on operational role, not an office or technical support function. Electromagnetic locating equipment is the primary tool, with ground-penetrating radar serving as a supplemental detection resource for complex conditions. The technician identifies buried infrastructure across an assigned territory, marks locations using APWA color-coded flags and paint, and documents all work in a ticket management system. Participants work active locate tickets beginning on Day 6 of the program. AmeriTrace serves as a safety-critical partner for CenterPoint Energy, Atmos Energy, and other operators and asset owners across Texas and New Mexico. Every locate ticket represents a real-world public safety decision. The work environment requires independent judgment and field discipline in demanding outdoor conditions, qualities that align directly with military service experience.
